Dealing With Anxiety Attacks

I’m just wondering what kind of symptoms you get?
Also, how often do you suffer panic attacks or severe anxiety (daily, weekly, monthly, etc)?
When you have a panic attack, how long does it usually last?
What kind of things do you do to try and control the symptoms during the attack?
Also, what causes your panic attacks?
Are they totally random or are they triggered by something specific (going out in public, riding in a car, etc)??
Just wanted to add my answers to these questions…It makes me feel better knowing that others deal with the same thing that I do.

My panic attacks usually come at night for some reason. I tend to wake up after a few hours sleep feeling panicky.
I usually start out with a tummy ache and have to use the bathroom. Then I get chills and my body gets tingly. I feel like there is a weight on my chest and I can’t breath well. Sometimes I get chest pains and sore left arm. And sometimes I feel lightheaded and my legs feel like jello if I have to walk.
Also, my mind races a mile a minute and I worry about things I have no control over…my biggest fear/worry is death (of me as my loved ones) and this is what triggers the panic attack most times.
I have these attacks randomly…I could have 3-4 panic attacks one week and none for 2 weeks straight.
I will sometimes feel very anxious if I feel overwhelmed or if I’m out in public and feel stressed out.
I’ve been dealing with this for 8 yrs now.

Im 27, male, medium build, i take opiate medication, and have never in my life had heart problems, ever. I started taking my meds about 9 months ago, and before i took them i never had any problems. about 3 months ago i started experiencing heart palpitations out of the blue. i was not doing any physical stress, or anything. almost feels like my eyes are kinda teary sometimes. well, i didnt know what to do, i didnt get any chest pains or anything, so i took some advice and took magnesium and potassium. they stopped. well after about 3 weeks of taking potassium, the palps went away. well here we are about 9 months later, and out of the blue, the palps started up again. i took a potassium pill and they went away for the night. the next morning, they came back. I had a infected tooth this time and was gonna start taking penicillin that day (penicillin VK has potassium in it) and the penicillin made them go away, i figured because of the potassium that was in the penicillin. Ive cut back alot on the salts ( i dont even use it anymore on food) and i dont eat too much junk. I thought it might be because of the tooth infection, but im not too sure, i did notice when i have a bad tooth ache, i get heart palpitations from the pain. Now, ive never had them before, i dont know what it could be, it doesnt seem to be anything serious at least it doesnt feel like it. I get constipation from the meds, but it doesnt get too bad, and i dont get dizzy or light headed. when i lay down it doesnt get worse or change really. Im thinking it might be low sodium, or a potassium deficency. but how long would i have to take potassium to get my levels back up? ive never had this problem till i took the medication, but it doesnt make sense, because opiates arent supposed to cause palpations. anyone with a similiar story? ive looked all over to see what the cause was and im desperate for some answer. Id really appreciate someone to take the time and really help me. Everytime ive told the doctor about it, he brushes it off and says everything is fine with my heart. I do have to say that i do have bad anxiety and panic attacks, but most of the time when it happens my anxiety is not even around. is it an adrenaline thing? any ideas? any suggestions as far as something i could do to pin point the reason? its getting annoying, and my doctor is a old quack, lol he is oldschool, im really healthy and have no other symptoms besides my hearing is some what off and i have a few bad teeth, other then that im as healthy as an ox. please help! thank you i appreciate it so much.!

A few months ago, I started having very severe panic attacks.

These are the symptoms I experienced:
- difficulty breathing and taking in deep breaths
- losing track of reality or difficulty thinking straight (my mind would seriously just go blank)
- chest pains
- feeling like someone was poking me and I was jerking away from them, but nobody was
among others…

And then they stopped for a few months. Recently, they started coming back and I would have one almost every day, but it would be much more minor. And then they stopped. And about a week later, I had a more severe one.

I don’t know what to do about it. I’m so scared that I’m going to get one so severe that I will end up in the emergency room (if anyone cares to take me to the hospital in the first place). Or that I will just completely go insane from them. (I am a very paranoid person, also)

I’m only 16, and it has been suggested that the attacks coming back could be due to stress. We can’t afford to take me to a doctor, get meds, or therapy, etc.

So what am I supposed to do?

Okay so I’ve been having pretty serious panic attacks lately,
symptoms are, speeding heart, sweaty palms, dizziness,
dry mouth, muscle tightness, and honestly I feel like I’m
just going to die or have a heart attack, literally.
I’ve been to the hospital twice because of this, they gave me an ekg test that came back normal, and a few other tests that came
back fine. They told me to stay away from soda, which I have, and
quit smoking, which I did this passed Monday.Im eating right,
and trying to stay away from heavy sugar. My only problem is
I’m still having pretty bad chest pains, even when I’m not having
a panic attack, I’m so worried something is wrong, I just feel
like I’m going crazy. Could the pains I’m feeling in my chest be related to my panic attacks? If there was something really wrong with my heart wouldn’t it of showed up in my ekg test? Please help I know
this is all kind of just throwing together but, I’ve done everything, and
I still feel like shitttt, and I just dont know what to do anymore.

Thanks a lot.

I’ve always had a kind of claustrophobia – i can’t stand locked doors, and i can’t stand ‘untrustworthy’ doors to be shut while i’m present.
I know it sounds silly, it may be irrational.
I’ve researched agoraphobia and panic attacks, the symptoms of those are what i have had recently. I clam up, feel nausea, can’t breath properly, sweat a lot more, feel chest pains, stomach pains. It is generally when i am in a social situation such as, a strange boy talking to me, i feel trapped like i can’t get out, like i’m going to die. It last between 10 minutes and 1 hour.
This too sounds silly.
My dad suffers from depression and used to have panic attacks, he has had a break down. Some say it’s hereditary. It’s very scary, i’m only just 15. I’m scared to go out now.
Does this sound like agoraphobia? Are they panic attacks? Is it linked to claustrophobia? Is it linked to my father?

Thank You For Your Help!
btw; Happy New Year!

Ive been up quite a few hours very puzzled with my situation.
I have anxiety and am on ativan for when i have an anxiety attack and i am on other medications. 150mg seroquel and 30mg celexa.
I took my meds like normal, then watched some tv for maybe idk two hours, and they make me very tired.. then i tried to fall asleep, but I felt sizzy and My stomach dropped so i got up and drank some water, friguring im having an attack. I calm myself down and try a few more time, and it keeps happening. I switched from laying on the floor, to the couch, to the bed. and Tried laying in all positions.
I still cannot fall asleep, because when i get the anxiety symptoms i automatically wake up. My symptoms in this case would be: dizziness, loss of coordination, fast heart rate. usually i get chest pains too but im not.
I think I should take my .5 ativan but I’m not sure. help?

At 2:00 am, I was laying in bed and I started getting chest pains directly in the center of my chest, I became nauseous and was having a difficult time breathing, my body ached all around like in my neck, arms, back, etc. I also took 2mg of xanax when these symptoms began which would mean I took xanax at around 2:05 am. These symptoms lasted for over an hour; now I’ve had panic attacks before and they only lasted maybe ten minutes. Please give me your input

i have anxiety to the highest extreme.
It affects everything in my life.
I feel tremendous pressures being around people.
I feel unaccepted when im around them
People tend to give me hard looks all the time
i have many complexes
i have many physical symptoms of anxiety
by the time school is over im completely sick
with low energy, where i need to sit down
relaxing with my mind on other things
it runs my life and makes me miserable
i dont know what to do nothing seems to help
i just can’t relax, its frustrating

In 2006 i went to the emergency room because i didnt know what i was experiencing. Which btw i also have panic attacks where your heart speeds up for an amount of time. I still didnt know at the time so they referred me to a heart specialist because i was having chest pains. When i got to know that it was anxiety i did go to a therapist for a year. I keep relapsing and im the worst at calming myself, nornally conversation with another person calms me, but its just really bad. Im having trouble dealing with it. Im trying to deal without meds because i dont want to be addicted and i dont like the side affects. School is terrible with it my blood pressure goes up when im in class, and i feel like im going to collapse while im walking to class. I get so sick of my mind and body ugh

i have aghoraphobia although i do go places but the only place im "comfortable" really is home. I dont feel like myself i want to do things but i just dont have the energy because my anxiety takes it all away. I need to find something fun to do so i can have a outlet. Im trying to keep my grades up but i can’t participate in discussions because i feel tremendous pressure when people are focused or not focused on me when im around others. I can’t ask questions in class either which is contributing to my math grade and my feelings keep me from telling the teacher about myself i dont want to make it a big deal, or have people pity me or feel sorry for me i just want to be happier with myself.

Okay I’m really hoping someone can help me out here.
I’m going to try and make this as brief as I can.
It started about a year ago; I was driving with my friends on our way to a concert, and all of a sudden I blacked out, had to pull over, and was really dizzy. I thought I was having a heart attack at 19 years old. I then felt very sick to my stomach, and felt like I was going to throw up.
The next day I was having on and off chest pains.
For months and months after that, I was having on and off chest pains, dizzy spells, stomach pains, and just overall feelings of unwellness and extreme fatigue. I went to the doctor several times, and they always ended up telling me it was anxiety from my new job.
Now, for the past few weeks, I’ve been having chest pain radiating from the left to the right side, to my back, to my throat/glands. At times, when I yawn I feel like I’m gagging. I also feel like at times I have to force myself to breath in a deep breath or I’m not breathing right. Yes, I do believe I get panic attacks and I have some anxiety, but is it possible to have these physical symptoms constantly? I went to the ER the other day and they tested my heart out and said everything was fine with it.
Any input is appreciated, thank you.

Hello. I have been taking Prozac for 2 years now for depression issues. I am 19 years old. About 2 months ago i got tired of takin it and saw no need for it and i quit taking it w/o telling doctor. But 2 months later i started getting chest pains… and my heart rate would rise, shortness of breath, and paranoid thoughts come to my head. I went to the doctor, thinking my heart may b n trouble. I told him i quit taking prozac and he said that is why i been having these anxiety/panic attacks, and he told me to immediantly start taking the prozac again. I started taking it again but i still have these attacks from once to twice a day…. the doctor and my friends mom (who is a respiratory therapist) said i will continue having the attacks until my body once again gets use to the medicine, which will take a few weeks… even tho they tell me this i still worry, am i just worrying for no reason? or is what they told me the truth, and im perfectly fine?
i thought of gettin EKG but isnt it expensive?….everyone from my mom to my grandma say not to worry that i will just continue having the attacks until my body gets use again to the prozac…thanks
so many good answers! appreciate it guys! it helps alot…..im what u can call a worrier…so with these attacks it makes me think im goin to have a heart attack.. but now i know i can calm down..thanks!

I have had "panic attack symptoms" since I was about 9 or so. My uncle even took me too the hospital once because I felt I could not breath. I could, but felt I couldn’t.
The doctor checked me very quickly (my throat) and said I was fine, nothing was blocking my airway.
Ever since then this has got worse. I feel sometimes a thumb is in my throat but if I open my mouth wide (like a dentist would) then I can breathe fine with no difficulty which shows there can’t actually be anything wrong.
Since christmas it has become a daily occurance for me to get a range of symptoms and it seems to be getting worse.
I’ve also noticed, i used to get chest pains and pains in my left arm/shoulder. I worried about my lungs and heart. But then again sometimes I feel fantastic.
I don’t want this to get worse but I don’t want to go to the doctor and get medication. I want to get over it myself, but I just don’t know how.
Please, help?

Thank you.
I am now 19 :)
*both my parents smoke which makes me more anxious about breathing and illnesses!

I’m seventeen and I’ve been dealing with Generalized Anxiety Disorder with panic attacks my entire life.

Recently, I’ve become very worried about whether or not I’ll get pregnant because I had some breakthrough bleeding on the Pill. I asked my doctor and she said breakthrough bleeding doesn’t reduce protection, but having anxiety of course I still worry!

Lately I’ve been having some nausea after anything I eat and I have pretty bad chest pains. It feels like something in my chest is going to pop if I breath in or out too hard. I’ve had these symptoms before when I was going through rather stressful times, but now of course I’m convinced they mean pregnancy. I don’t have any other symptoms.

Anyone want to reassure me that I’m just psyching myself out? I get so scared. Is that what you think it is?

BTW – I’m on the pill Lybrel, which does not have a period break at all, so I don’t ever have a missed period to go by.

Hi I am 19 and recently I have been having chest pains and they are only on my left side. I went to my doctor and she believed it was a pulled or strained muscle because she says its very rare that 19 year olds have heart attacks. She checked my blood pressure and it was 120/80 and I mentioned that my pain was more in my armpit and then went through my back. I did mention tingling in just two fingers, so she believes it is a compressed nerve. I recieved an EKG last april and everything was normal, my doctor suggested that this could all be related to my health anxiety that I just started having a few months ago is this true or does this sound like a heart problem?

i have chest pain even when i dont have anxiety. fear or stress seems to add to it, but i also get something when i’m relaxed, just walking along. i am under treatment for panic attacks, and this takes away any ‘anxiety’ but i still have chest pains, which cause the muscles in my left shoulder and left side of my head to spasm and i throw up. what could this be?

Hello I started having anxiety attacks I guess about 6 months ago the first happened when I was working so I left work freaking out, as I was driving I had this overwhelming sensation to run my car off the road luckily I didn’t and a good friend helped me get through that first night. I thought everything was good but then I started getting chest pain one night which I thought was a heart attack so I had a friend take me to the hospital where they did all their tests and I turned out to be fine, they didn’t say it was anxiety that time because I wasn’t having any anxiety issues at the time, plus I didn’t even know that they could correlate or that that first one was an anxiety attack. Well months later I had the chest pains again but with the worst anxiety ever I thought I was dying so literally I was the crazy guy in the ER haha the one that everyone thinks is crazy because they are going crazy, well I turned out to be fine again and this time they saw the anxiety symptoms clear as day so they gave me xanex which kind of helps kind of doesn’t. My main problem is I have chest pains all the time I guess since I last went to the ER 2 months ago. When I say all the time I mean all the time I wake up and im good for like 30 min then they hit its mostly in my left side chest, back and arm if my girlfriend rubs these areas it helps for I little bit of time but they come back quick. I feel that I have really only had about 5 "anxiety attacks" since I got on the meds which I only take when I actually have an attack, but the chest pains are there all the time, I really am hoping some one has a suggestion on how to stop these pains they feel like tightness and sharpness and they spread all over my chest and back even all the way down to my wrist it really weird and its effecting my normal life all I want to do is stay in bed because i don’t feel it when I sleep. Last night I was out and all of a sudden it felt my like my heart fluttered with pain for a second and then I felt pain explode through my chest and back and for the first time into my stomach this gave a severe panic attack and the last day has been rough. All together I feel like im starting to miss out on things in my life because of it. I know this is long and drawn out im just hoping some people who have gone through the same thing can offer some advice on how they have have coped with these issues. At least until I can get in to see a doctor. Thank you so much.

I get panic attacks at the drop of a dime, for any little reason. I cut soda and coffee out of my diet a few months ago. Today I drank a can of mountain dew and now I feel like i’m going to die. My heart races, I get chest pains, and it feels like i’m going to stop breathing. I’m not having a heart attack. It’s deffinatley anxiety. Why does ceffeine spark my anxiety?

BTW: I’ve been to the doctor for this. They didn’t give me an answer.

I am 55 and have been under treatment for an erratic heartbeat since I was in my late 20’s. However, the treatment I’m presently receiving – 320 mg. of Inderal per day plus 1.5 mg of Xanax – is only partially effective. I am wondering if there might be a more effective treatment available to me. The condition doesn’t bother me much when I am resting or relaxed. Though it seems to be triggered mostly by my emotions, I have noticed that more and more it flares up under physical strain as well. I seriously doubt if I could endure a stress test simply because the fear of such a test would probably trigger an episode before they could even start it. I’ve never had any chest pains or any other symptoms of heart disease. I am also being treated for mildly high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol and an anxiety disorder. What bothers me most is the degree to which I am affected psychologically by all this. It puts a crimp in my lifestyle and keeps me from doing things that I might ……
otherwise do. Oh, and by "erratic heartbeat", I am not alking about a rapid or racing heart. I am talking about a condition where the heart seems yo lose its rythm and creates a sensation of having a butterfly lose inside my chest. Also, I would prefer that only qualified medical personnel answer this question. Thanks.
