Could chest pain be related to stress, anxiety and panic attack?

October 24th, 2009 by admin | Filed in Anxiety Symptoms

For the past 2 months I’ve been feeling what you could describe a "typical" heart pain. It’s a pressure, squeezing, dull ache felt in the center of the chest (i.e. not over the heart) that is usually relieved by rest or Tylenol. I wouldn’t call a pain, just a pressure or tightness, right around the breast bone. I feel that 24 hours, some days it moves to the arm pit on the left side, some days goes back to the center chest. The 1st time it happened I went to see my MD and a Cardiologist. Several EKG’s later and a Heart Stress Test I was told everything was normal. The stress test said I had a chance of a heart failure of 0.002% in the next 2 years. So I was pretty relieved that the heart wasn’t the issue.but that pain won’t go away. my MD thinks it is a Mix of Stress and Anxiety, which the anxiety piece he is right. So I’ve been on Citalopram for 4 weeks, the anxiety is somewhat controlled, but the Chest pressure/pain is still there. Could all this be anxiety and how to end the pain?

I had the same problem several years ago. One doctor said I had a mitral valve problem and recommended immediate surgery. I got a second opinion and was diagnoses with stress. This doctor treated it with 800mg of motrin, rest and change in lifestyle that was stressing me out. Find out what things are bothering you, work, bills, a bad relationship and make a change. You only live once. When you are gone the things that stressed you will still be around.

It very well be related to your anxiety and stress. You are doing the right thing in taking the meds and having a cardiological workup. You may consider seeing a gastroenterologist to rule out gallbladder or other digestive issue.

You need to urgently have an ECG. (electrocardiogram). It is heart trouble. Please get a second opinion.

my dad felt the same symptoms about two months ago.after i got out of school my mom told me my dad thought he had a heart attack and that he was in the hospital.when we went there the doctor told him he was simply over-stressed and that he needed rest.so he took off of work for a few days and it went away.this kind of pain is just like a stress headache except in your chest.unless you have previously diagnosed heart problems it’s probably just stress and rest is the only solution i can think of.

You could be experiencing indigestion from the stress that you have. See if your pain decreases in upright position and you have more pain when lying down. It could be acid reflux from your esophagus but sometimes it feels like it’s in the chest. If you continue with the pressure and tightness in the chest, I would call the doctor back. You want to be sure that it’s not your heart. Our son had acid reflux and we had to put the head of the bed on blocks.

Since you’ve seen your doctor about it and the tests are ok, there’s a good chance it is stress/anxiety related.
