could too much synthroid med cause following symptoms? anxiety, paranoa,wt loss, finally pshcosis in elderly?
my mom is 70 and had been on sythroid. not sure when they put her on .007mcg of sythroid but after a fall in July, she entered into hosp. dr up’ed it to 1.0 , i noticed a big change of anxiety, and she has gone downhill since. she is currently being treated for depression, anxiety, psychosis . Dr says it will take 4-6 weeks for med to make a difference. no one knows what causes psychosis in elderly, but i am wondering why Dr lowered the dose immediately to .025mcg?
they did check. i can’ t tell you the exact values, but in the chart there are 3 in a row, the 1st was normal, the middle one was low, and the 3rd one was normal. i don’t know why that makes sense, but they lowered it based on some of her symptoms, Physchiatrist on a senior behavioral unit,

Could my mom get better, and gain her mind back? she started acting poorly then too, stopped watching tv, and would just stare, sort of gave it up, she also has had hx of depression, and chronic pain with Rhuematoid arthritis. she also has had several UTI’s this year, and i understand this causes some of the confusion, dementia in elderly.
Could the symptoms of pshycosis and confusion go away when the thyroid levels are reduced? how long should it take for this to happen? Or could it have gone to far? leaving her with dementia, pshycosis permanantly? thanks for you well wishes, this is so difficult for us to comprehend , how this change has rendered my mom so mentally challenged.

Yes it can. It can cause the body to be "hyperthyroidism". While her thyroid may not be working properly, there is too much med in the system and the body cannot utilize it all. Have they checked her free t3 and t4 or tsh levels? I am surprised they are tweaking the doses without basing them on lab values, since that is the proper way to dose thyroxine.
Yes it could. It can also cause high blood pressure. The doctor can keep up with how much she needs if he takes a full scale thyroid test. He needs to check her TSH, T3 and T4… It is important to keep a close watch on her thyroid by taking frequent test until it is regulated. Even then she should have a blood test at least once every three months.
My mom is 66, and been on synthroid for 41 years, after thyroid cancer (it was removed surgically). Her dosage levels have changed over the years because she’s been good about getting her bloodwork done. Whenever she feels "off" she’ll go in for a check-up. Then, usually everything gets back to normal.
The symptoms you mention, depression, anxiety, etc. are typical of an over or under active thyroid. My wife is going through the same thing. She’s got a hyper-thyroid condition, and refuses to take her meds, because the side affect for her is hair-loss. I wish she would take the meds because she can have serious mood swings w/o them.
I grew up w/ a woman w/ this condition and can testify that it’s a difficult battle. You can research it online if you haven’t already.

Once the medication clears her body (you state they have now lowered her dose) there should be no reason for her symptoms not to subside. She appears to be very sensitive to how high her levels are. Some individuals, like myself, function better, on the high normal side of the scale, while others can not tolerate this and must be kept closer to the low side so they do not develop hyperthyroid symptoms. How is her pulse and temperature. Usually when an individual is experiencing hyperthyroid symptoms, their pulse is rapid and their temperatures are elevated also. So don’t be surprised if she experiences a fast pulse and fever before this is all over with. It takes about 2 weeks with any ajustments to start seeing results, so hang in there and let us know how she is doing. Good Luck.
