Cause of chest tightness?

August 5th, 2009 by admin | Filed in Anxiety Symptoms

Hi everyone. For the last 3 or 4 weeks of so I’ve been experiencing chest pressure and tightness. In the beginning it only happened 2, maybe 3 times per week. Lately, it happens every day. I feel tightness in the middle of my chest, but it doesn’t affect my breathing.
I am 19 years old, female, normal BMI, work and go to school full-time. I would consider my job stressful, because I work under tight deadlines. Also, I usually work 45-50 hours per week. Not sure if it’s relevant, but I usually get 6 hours of sleep per night.
Two days ago, while on the phone at work, the chest pressure was really bad and I started feeling incredibly nervous and felt it difficult to speak at a normal pace. I know this may lead you to think that the chest pressure is due to panic attacks, but I don’t think so. This is the only time I’ve felt nervous since the chest tightness started. This might just be a coincidence, not a symptom.
My questions is, what might be the cause of this chest tightness? Anxiety? Stress? Something else? Of course, I am looking for opinions only. I know I can’t be diagnosed (if needed that is) by asking like this. I am just looking for advice, so I can decide whether I should see a doctor or not.
Thank you for your time!

    See your doctor IMMEDIATELY!

Your chestpains are probably due to stress. Stress can give people heart attacks at any age! My partner is a doctor and she sees an incredible number of young people who have heart problems.

Many of them die before they see a doctor!

Stress is a major cause for heart problems, but so is the highly saturated fatty fast food and you don’t get nearly enough sleep for a 19 year old.

No job is worth dying for.

To me it sounds like a lot of stress from lack of proper sleep and for the number of hours you work for your age. Most kids at your age have other things on their minds besides trying to cope with a 50 hour work week. Although the money may be good working those hours that money isn’t going to do you any good if this turns out to be something more serious. My suggestion to you is to reduce the number of hours you work to a much more tolerable rate and get the rest you need. If this doesn’t help with your symptoms then its time to see the doctor.

It could be caused by all of that…you need to go to the doctor now!

There are too many causes of these feelings to go into here I suggest you see a Dr and get it checked out.I have attached a reference to the Mayo Clinic site that has a list of non cardiac reasons. Working those hours and doing full time school and only getting 6 hrs sleep may be putting your body under too much stress-been there done that only mine was two jobs and part time college A teenagers body need 9-9.5 hours sleep that’s why those that have late night then school early in the morning are often sleepy and not alert and often effects their schoolastic work and can affect your immune system
I quote"In teens (and adults), insufficient sleep can affect learning through a reduction in attention span, motivation, efficiency in performing tasks, and ability to think creatively. It also results in a greater number of errors and changes to metabolism associated with obesity and weakened immunity"
