Is talk therapy really effective in the treatment of anxiety or are meds more effective?

March 19th, 2010 by admin | Filed in Treating Anxiety

A friend & I are debating. I say chatty people with anxiety tend to talk circles around talk therapy & thus meds are more effective; and that talk therapy has the better track record for short term depression. My friend contends that talk therapy with or without a combo of meds is the most effective treatment for both depression and anxiety, short or long term for either.

This is a very difficult answer to anyone to try to provide. In short, the drugs alone are rarely the answer. I am not some prohibishionist trying to argue against the value of drugs…certainly they have value. However, when treatment for anxiety is nothing more than meds, it is very unlikely to actually solve the problem. Best case scenario, the patient might find a system that works for them as to when they had them. Perhaps during these times that they are on the meds they feel better. But what about when they aren’t taking them? And how often are they taking them? Do they want to take them more often? Do they want to up the dose? Without resorting to scare tactics, these mind medicines are powerful and to give everyone wtih anxiety a bottle of pills and one sheet of paper probably isn’t going to really help them much. It would very well hurt them.

With therapy, you have a professional who can analyze your situation and try to get to the bottom of it. Why are you anxious? How anxious are you? How often do you experience anxiety? Are there things you could try to deal with these issues without meds? The therapist will have some techniques that you may find very helpful. In not, the therapist can work with a doctor to prescribe something for your anxiety. But that still won’t be the answer to all of your problems.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the best forms of treatment often combine both medication and therapy.

Yes certainly, talk therapy is effective to get out of depression and mild anxiety..
but talking or chatting with friends are not much worthy.
There is therapy is called Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is very effective, i suggest you to do this.
There is another therapy that also works very good called Rational emotive behavioural therapy (REBT)
Pls find some websites might be helpful

Talk therapy and medical therapy have both shown to be effective each in their own right. Having said that, if combined they produce a synergistic affect which in many cases is used as optimal treatment of both depression and anxiety.

Treatment is individual based. An individual that suffers from anxiety and/or depression may experience symptoms that are unique from another sufferer. Therefore, because of this fact, therapy many times is focused toward the relief and/or needs of that particular individual’s issues.

As you can see there is no one best answer here.

talk therapy is difficult for people with anxiety and is say its more beneficial for depression. But a combination iof meds and therapy is probably best for both

Generally therapy combined with medication is the most effective treatment for depression and anxiety. Medication is prescribed if the depression and anxiety are diagnosed as a chemical imbalance.
