Xanax is not working?Please help?

February 21st, 2010 by admin | Filed in Treating Anxiety

So I started treatment for panic attacks about 2 days ago.

My doctor prescribed Xanax 0.25g 2 x a day. Today, still a couple of hours before having to take my second one I had a horrible panic attack. The worst by far.

I’m concerned.Wasn;t the medication supposed to make me stop having them? Can you still keep panicking even though medicated?

I think i might be panicking about taking the medication. It scares me all the side effects that I read about, like seizures.

I took my 0.25g tablet when having the attack, but an hour later still not feeling well I took another one.Is that ok?

Im sooo scared

Ask your doc for alternatives. Some people react different to different drugs. Took me 3 tries to get mine right… and I’ve found it was a bad decision after all. DO NOT let your doc prescribe paroxetine/paxil.. gawd, it’s murder to come off.
I found looking on anxiety websites, there is a lot of useful info on the drugs that work the best/have the least side effects and are less harmful to the body.. i found this out after being on the drug for a while.

Medication is only one way of dealing with anxiety. I think you should look into additional ways like psychotherapy, group therapy yoga etc.
    good luck

I know what it’s like to feel like that. I have had panic attacks myself. I also get very panicky when trying a new medication. Personally I did not like the way Xanax made me feel. You should talk to your doctor and maybe try a med that might work better for you. There are many different kinds.

It may be that you just need a higher dose until your body starts to help the medication stabilize your panic attacks. Most people don’t get the side effects like siezures. I took it for about a year on a pretty high dose and I only expeirenced some tiredness but thats expected on a high dose. 2 mg to be exact and that was extended release. Talk to your doctor and see if a slight increase may be what you need. Its ok to take an extra one for a panic attack but not if your looking to drug yourself. My doctor had me on two different doses. 2 mg through out the day and .50mg for a panic attak if I had one. Also, try getting connected with a therapist to help you control you panic attacks. Alot of the time with therapy and medication you can almost eliminate your attacks. Hope you found this useful.

Medication may help mask the issue, but you should look at it as a "crutch" to help you start working on coping mechanism’s. Talk to your doctor, there are other alternatives, but nothings going to "shut it off" and make you feel 100%.

The harder you recoil from the anxiety, the worse it gets.

I posted this on a few other Q’s but might be helpful:

I lived with daily panic attacks for years. Racing mind, dizziness, faint, chest pains, tingling (actually more like lightning from head to toe) feelings for years. I had it so bad and the thoughts would get so bizaar, I thought for sure I was going insane–that I was unique.

I finally found someone else that had experienced the same and no longer lived in this constant fear and turmoil. I was able to share exactly what I felt, thought, etc. and it was like the weight of the world was lifted. I thought for sure I’d be committed if anyone really knew the crap I thought (even though I knew it was insane). I had been living day in and day out, mind racing for answers-which always turned into a downward spiral and eventually depression from years of being tired of being miserable. I felt that if I stopped the thinking and actually let go, that I’d fall apart and that the emptiness would get worse. In reality, the exact opposite is true.

I stopped recoiling from panic attacks and openly welcomed them. I kept doing things regardless of how terrified I was that I’d "lose it" and stopped recoiling. Slow but sure, the panic attacks left because I welcomed them as opposed to recoiling. The feelings of bewilderment and other physical feelings were still there, but eventually they dissipated as well. Today, it’s been years and I no longer live in fear, turmoil and panic–with zero medication or supplements. My thinking has changed, which in turn changes the feelings.

Trust me, your not unique and you can change. I am not affiliated, but I would encourage you to check out www stresscenter dot com and read her story as well as the message boards and chat. That stuff is free. The tapes are expensive, but if you think you relate, check out ebay or craigslist in your area and pick them up for a fraction of the cost. I did not do this entire program, but a doc along the way turned me on to one tape and it did help.

Your not alone and your not unique. Get plugged in to effective program for change and you’ll put this chapter behind you. Any Q’s feel free to ping me. Again, I’m not affiliated with the site and not trying to push it on you, but feel it may be helpful. No longer keep any of those crazy thougths to yourself and they no longer hold any power.

Best wishes on the road to recovery.
