Attention problems after an attack?

February 16th, 2010 by admin | Filed in Anxiety Attacks

About a month ago I was attacked at work by someone twice my size and weight. He threw me into a tool shed 5-6 times. Since then I have had normal post-attack symptoms like anxiety, but now there’s something new: I can’t attend to ANYTHING! It takes me days just to do my grad school assignments that used to take less than an hour. My inability to focus is making me feel overwhelmed and just a touch of panic. Before the attack, I was very on top of things. Could the attack have something to do with my change in behavior/personality? Please help. Thank you.
Sorry for not mentioning this before, but I am currently seeing a counselor, I’m taking medication for depression (for years now). I have talked to my professors saying that while it isn’t affecting my work IN the clinic, it’s taking me more effort to get paperwork done. but they have almost all said that explaining myself is "unprofessional" and accuse me of "bringing my personal issues into the clinic" so they won’t let me explain myself. It’s frustrating.

"I can’t bring my personal issues into the clinic" and that explaining it to them is "unprofessional" so they prevent me from expressing my difficulty.

Hon, the attack has EVERYTHING to do with what’s going on with the changes you mentioned. Mine was delayed by about 12 years b/c I blocked it out. Once it came back to me, I couldn’t focus, had constant headaches, couldn’t sleep, didn’t trust guys at all, and my studies went down the toilet.

My Shakespeare professor gave me the best advice. Our university had a medical school full of future doctors who were supervised by accredited doctors. He suggested I go there and talk to them. After several tests were done, my wonderful doctor told me I was completely healthy but incredibly depressed (which she had suspected all along).

We tried several anti-depressants and found one that helped out the most. She also asked that I go back into counseling, which I did. Between the meds and the counseling, I did get back on track. It took probably a year from the time I talked to that professor, but part of the reason it took so long was that my brother was killed about five months into the process.

Good luck, and please get some counseling. And *do* talk to your professors, let them know the problems you are having, and ask for any suggestions. They may have additional tips for coping with everything going on. Take care, and email me if you ever need to.
