is there any physical illness that causes anxiety or any other mental disorder?

February 7th, 2010 by admin | Filed in Anxiety Symptoms

i was diagnosed with borderline personality years ago, the mental health system up to now has FAILED me and im still struggling to get the help and care i need at the age of 31 ..

i have ptsd symptoms , all the symptoms and want to be tested and diagnosed for it, as well as the borderline , i also suspect bipolar , as i have some bipolar symptoms – racing thoughts everyday, cant concentrate or hold a thought…..forget constantly……thoughts scattered everywhere….struggle to organize.

i have badanxiety, obsessive thoughts and worries , hyper vigillant outside…on edge…get panic attacks and palpitations…….struggle with a lot of rage and anger still……..years ago used to have involuntary outbursts of rage that used to ” take over ” me outside……just before the outbursts , id remember my thoughts racing badly, feel extremely anxious, hyper vigillant……feel paranoid that people were threatening me……used to struggle with a hostile angry posture….threatening…..on guard , then id just ‘ lose it ‘ – and start attacking people , lashing out……..making a public scene.

that was many years ago now, i controlled the outburst all by myself, without any psychiatric help…….and since then been searching for proper care and help…………….and via the internet, been trying to research my symptoms and whats wrong with me..

i put it down so far to my diagnosis years ago of BPD, – which i accept, but also know i have PTSD, and put alot of the symptoms because of that, im also wondering if bipolar plays a part to.

i have symptoms that bpd doesnt cover, throughout my life ive suffered great psychological abuse , a few physical attacks including a head injury in a street attack, when i lost control of rage in 1997 , my skull was never cracked, but the skin torn open on top, ive also suffered constantly being victimized in life.

alot of people wouldnt of been able to take the stuff what i took and still with stand.

recentley i stumbled on a question here which made me think, could any of my symptoms be caused by physical illness ? – ie : thyroid problems ?
if they were , what would i do about it ? how would i get tested ?, and what would i ask to be tested for ?

here was the question :

it was only short and there was only one answer

wow sounds like things are really difficult for you right now :( i’ve been through my own anxiety and depression problems so i know how difficult they can be, i also know that there are some important physical things you need to look out for in case they are a factor in your mental health.

the anxiety, panic, rage, palpitations, racing thoughts, paranoia and other symptoms you describe can be the result of a low blood sugar problem called hypoglycemia. fortunately hypoglycemia is easily treatable through diet, just eating to keep your blood sugars balanced and avoiding having too much irritant foods like sugar, caffeine, alcohol, refined carbs and junk food (all of these things will make you feel really bad if they are the main part of your diet). i’m not very good at explaining the symptoms of it, but take a look at this website for more info: http://www.hypoglycemia.org/

discovering hypoglycemia is what allowed me to recover from my own panic and anxiety problems, it’s incredibly important that we eat well for our mental health and stability.

hypoglycemia can also be a symptom of adrenal fatigue which is basically when your whole nervous systems just blows out if you’ve been under too much stress, been very ill, some people say it happened to them after taking a certain drug like steroids or the contraceptive pill. with adrenal fatigue anxiety and panic are big symptoms, as well as things like finding it impossible to get up in the mornings, constantly feeling exhausted and unrefreshing sleep. if you’ve been suffering from PTSD then i would guess that possibly with all the stress your body is under that you’re just totally exhausted at this stage and by taking care of yourself properly it is possible to get better. you just need time and patience, and hard work.

once again to explain it better take a look at these videos:

    http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4424538802040722105

i hope this helps a bit, believe me these are well worth looking into, like i said all this information allowed me to help myself get back to full health again despite crippling panic. i also went to a psychotherapist for over a year and worked hard in therapy to get better. i believe a combination of diet & lifestyle change along with good therapy is the best way to treat anxiety. i wrote a big post on all the things that helped me get me through my own problems if you’d like to take a look: http://www.anxietyforum.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4087

i really hope you’re feeling better soon xx

    SEE A PSYCHIATRIST!

    1. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
    2. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
    3. Major Depressive Disorder
    4. Social Anxiety
    5. Schizophrenia

They’re just FIVE of the mental conditions you could have. They can all be treated with an SSRI, an atypical antipsychotic, or both, along with cognitive therapy from a clinical psychologist. Thyroxine is not what you need, you don’t have an endocrine disorder.

Let me tell you something else, something from personal experience, the system can only fail you as a KID, you’re an ADULT now, you’re 31 years old! That means you’ve been FAILING YOURSELF for at least 13 years! That self-pity, that blaming, using the Internet, all that hasn’t helped you.

Quit living in the past and take control of your own life.

BPD (as I’m sure you know) is very difficult. Not only to treat, but to live with. I applaud you on that alone. However, it is important to remember that it is a personality disorder, and thus very unlike other diseases such as PTSD or Bipolar. I cannot diagnose you, and nobody on here should try to, there’s much more needed to do that.

My advise initially: Be aware that labeling has risks of limiting or ‘boxing you in’. You can have symptoms of PTSD or Bipolar without ‘having’ it. At the same time, You can have BPD, and not fit into ‘the box’ 100%. The other issues you have could be spurred from your preexisting condition.

I would contact a professional to discuss your evolved questions and concerns, because nobody on Yahoo can give you all of what you need on here.

  4. Never ending story | 7/02/10

I always tell people on here when they say the system has failed them that they have to work on being their own advocate. Like one answerer has stated that you are an adult so you should be able to find some help.

Just what areas do you need help in? You’ve been diagnosed with BPD which as far as I know the only thing that can help is therapy and maybe an SSRI. Do you take medication or do have the chance to take meds, but refuse? If you don’t already have a social worker I suggest you get one as they are a great resource in helping you find community support and help especially if money is a problem. My SW has helped me tremendously.

I do know that an underactive thyroid can cause depression. I was on synthroid for a little while as lithium messed up my endocrine system. And there are many other physical illnesses that can cause psychiatric symptoms.

The interenet can be a great tool to discuss with other people in a like minded community about your problems.

    Go to this website:

    http://nami.org/

On this website they have discussion boards where you can ask questions and get decent replies in regards to whatever issues you are having. I use this site quite often and it helps and it’s much better than asking a bunch of bored teenagers on Y!A.

Good luck and go in peace!
