Do you find that you have heart palpitations or irregular beats with a Anxiety or Panic Attack?

January 26th, 2010 by admin | Filed in Anxiety Attacks

I have Panic and Anxiety disorder…..sometimes, even if I don’t go into a full fledged attack, I still get symptoms like Irregular heartbeats showing up on my BP monitor, and feels like its hard to breathe. Is this common?

Just so you know, I am a very athletic 30 year old male, who has had all the other tests ran such as 24 Holter monitor, echo cardiogram, catscans, bloodwork, chest xrays….etc…etc…. my doc’s tell me it’s anxiety….

Do these things sound common?

I take Lexapro 10mg once a day, and 0.5 Lorazepam in the a.m. and 0.25 Lorazepam at night (total of 0.75 daily)

I also have heart palpitations and irregular heartbeats from time to time and have also been on heart monitors. The doctor tells me the same thing that it’s just anxiety. I was also born with a heart murmur which could have little to do with it.

Lorazepam made me have heart palpitations.Doctor took me off right away. Different drugs effect people the opposite sometimes.

Yep – the irregular heartbeat is very common.. And the difficulty in breathing is common also..

As a paramedic, that is normal. A palpitation is just noticing your heart beating. Just slow down and take a nice walk or relax in a chair and breathe deeply and regularly. It will take practice, but you’ll get there. Anxiety is a state of mind. Ask your doctor about hydroxyzine. It will calm you down without significant side effects.

It is common for some people to have irregular heartbeats and an increase of bp, this is cause by the bodies reaction to chemicals that flor the body during an anxiety attack. However, Lorazepam is known to increase or cause these symptoms for some users. I would consult with your dr , it may be time for you to stop taking Lorazepam and try a antidepressant(SSRI) instead. I have been on an SSRI for about three years now, i take them daily and have to say it has been about two years since i have had a panic attack.
