Severe panic attacks….?
I have had severe panic attacks for about 10 years. I have tried every medication and therapy, read all the books. The only medicine that helps at all is xanax. I take it daily and could not function without it. I know it’s a mental thing but I can’t control them and I still have them especially in restauraunts, crowded places, standing in line somewhere, traffic. I am so tired of living with it. Has anyone else been in this situation and what did you do? Are there other treatments? Hypnosis? I am so tired of it controlling my life! Thanks!
I know what you mean Cherry, I always feel safe with my cell phone. Ill take it out and look at it and I guess I know I can call someone if I have to. It’s crazy tho. The worst about having the attacks is that I know other people are looking at me and wondering what the hell is wrong with me.

If you’ve tried every medication, therapy and books and nothing has worked, do you wonder if it might not be a mental problem but a physical one?
Anxiety/panic is a symptom of a problem. It could be something as simple yet serious as anemia (racing heart, dizziness, blurry vision, weakness are symptoms) or as common as hypoglycemia (symptoms are anxiety, panic, shaking, fear/phobias, nervousness, irrational behavior, emotional instability).
It’s too simple to believe but it’s true: you are what you eat. If yous skip meals, diet, don’t eat enough, eat a high carb, high sugar diet, drink a lot of soda or drinks with artificial sweeteners, and don’t eat enough protein, you’re going to be mentally out of balance. Add hormonal changes and possibly years of not eating right and your brain is a mess.
The brain chemicals are made from amino acids, which come from protein. Most people, especially women, eat the typical "pasta/salad/sugar" diet. How about you?
Here are a couple of ideas if you want to try to get to the cause of your panic:

Once you start healing your body physically, you can also work on self-hypnosis. I have hypnosis MP3’s on claustrophobia and anxiety if you like. Drop me a line. Take care.
what i do is i take deep breaths.
if i am with a group of ppl i go off to my self to calm myself down. it really works.
try it and ull see.
f–k yeah and i ws scared as hell t oleave my house till about a year ago. i practices coping skills and took my meds. the thing that got me going was im not going to let this damn thing control me and im going t olive my life scared free. wve been working for about two weeks now after not working for about three years. ive met the woman of my dreams and im going live my life happy and safe. the best thing i can tell you is just say f–k it. yo only live once and you have to live to be happy. mail me back if i can do anythingfor you
I have suffered from them for a few years …they got so bad I was taking regular trips to the ER. My doctor put me on a daily (very high) dose of anti depressants, plus Klonopin that I take whenever I’m going to be in a crowded place, or when I feel an attack coming on. I have tried everything else immaginable, but these meds are all that keep me sane. I told my doctor that I don’t want to be someone who depends on meds to survive …he said that he would never tell a diabetic to not take their insulin, so he won’t tell me to not take my meds …..that made me feel better !!
Good luck !!!
Hello–fellow anxiety sufferer here. (11 years) I finally gave up and went to a psychiatrist instead of my regular doctor. She thoroughly went through my history and was very detailed. Then prescribed zoloft which I was kinda like, yeah whatever, just another med. I took it though and three weeks later, I’m a totally different person. Turns out I have a chemical imbalance that caused it. I still have xanax for the occasional minor anxiety but very rarely use it. This is after 11 years of constant anxiety everyday, pain in my chest, panic attacks throughout the day and night, depression, you name it. I was at the bottom of the barrel. Hope this helps. Good luck!
im only 20 but i have had the same thing since college. what i HAVE to do is ALWAYS have a bottle of water with me. this distracts me from whatever it is. then as soon as i feel the wave of heat or the heart pumping i just have to tell myself to calm down, it’s fine, all these people are fine so i should be fine. i think about what i have to do and where i have to go and i will be going home soon. its all about persuading myself that it will be ok. i really hope this helps because i know how nasty it can be!!
I wouldn’t go as far as hypnosis, lots of people have things like this.
If you’re in a place with friends, excuse yourself and go to the bathroom. Go into a cubicle and lock the door and try to calm yourself down. Breath slowly and rythmically.
If you are in a situation where you can’t go to the bathroom or an enclosed area, such as queues, take deep breaths, count to fifty, close your eyes and relax yourself. Steady your breath and try to mentally block out the sound around you.
[Obviously when you are in traffic it's pretty silly for you to close your eyes incase the jam jerks forward and you've got idiots shouting at you from behind. =) ]
I hope this helps, but above all, reassure yourself that you are in control. You can stop the panic, and you know how to.
Good Luck.
It’s not weird to carry your cellphone with you to make you feel better! That’s ALL my brother could do. Everytime he had an panic attack he would call me. I was his "safe" person. He would call me at 2am and I would talk him down. He even found an employer that would let him carry it with him.
I hope you get the help you need. It’s something that isn’t taken very seriously in this country and it should be!
i agree with hannah deep breaths really work. You slowly take it in and exhale through your mouth. this technique calms you down quickly. also you can try this link
