anxiety attacks durring pregnancy?

November 26th, 2009 by admin | Filed in Anxiety Symptoms

Ever since I found out that I was going to have to have my baby in Jackson ,MS (thats about a 4 hour drive) I have been having these attacks. At first i didn’t know what was happening I just thought I was sick. but after the 2nd one I called my doctor and told them my symptoms they said it sounded like anxiety attacks. they prescribed me some vistaril but it doesn’t help it only puts me to sleep and the next day I’m groggy all day. I just can’t take those. My question is what should I ask doctor to give me. I have had 3 attacks in 2 weeks and i need something i can take on the spot like whenever i feel my nerves going haywire. also i’m 32 weeks pregnant. any advice would be a big help. i see my doctor tomarrow.
my baby has a small blockage somewhere between her kidney and bladder that is causing a backup of urine and the only pediatric uroligist in the state is in Jackson

First, isn’t there a hospital that’s closer than 4 hours away? Why on earth do you have to go that far?

As far as the anxiety goes, you need to be assertive and tell your doctor that the Vistaril isn’t cutting it and you’re still having problems. They are the only ones who can decide if there is anything else safe enough to put you on while you’re pregnant. Vistaril is the drug of choice to treat anxiety in pregnancy. If you’re falling asleep, then it’s obviously working – you can’t be anxious in your sleep! I know the grogginess isn’t fun, but if you aren’t anxious, then isn’t it sort of worth it?

Otherwise, try herbal tea (chamomile is good for relaxation), try aromatherapy (lavender is a good one), and most importantly, recognize your triggers for anxiety and try to use positive self-talk to calm yourself down. You can often have more control over reactions like this if you practice meditation or breathing or relaxation exercises like guided imagery (imagining yourself in a place of peace and comfort).

Are you anxious simply because of where you’re delivering? The best way to cure anxiety is to identify and eliminate the thing that’s making you anxious. Sounds like you need to try to make some changes in your life to try to lessen your anxiety.

    Good luck to you!

Stay away from all tablets except iron and multivit which is good for babys growth. Eat healthy plenty of veg, fruit and nuts and lots of water. Keep a strong mind, if you have anxiety attacks your baby too will have those later. Please relax and keep your mind active by reading or listening to music or doing something constructive.

try to realax. I honestly cannot suggest anything because I have not been confronted with that yet. But I would just tell you to please relax and try and take it easy.

If you have a health food store around try rescue remedy. My midwife suggested it for me. You can get it in drops or spray.

Nothing really helps "on the spot" except you teaching yourself how to deal, all pills will take a little while to work, then you still have to deal with it until that time, and by the time the pill kicks in, you would have already gotten over it yourself. So my best suggestion, is to try some kind of relaxation therapy, meditation maybe, yoga. something to put you into a nice state of relaxation. Mine is just listening to music. Once i feel like im getting anxious, i get busy, and clean or listen to music, and im fine within a little while. good luck.

Zoloft is often prescribed for anxiety and depression – talk to your obgyn for that – the benefits outweigh the uncontrollable emotional attacks and the depression that can follow. Try wearing relaxing smells like lavender lotion and baths found at Wal-Mart – it will trick your senses to relax. Also, try pampering yourself with professional massages, baths with candles, good movies to laugh off unconscious pressure you build up, and talking with friends to keep you grounded and sane. Pamper yourself as much as possible and don’t hesitate to treat yourself to treats, sweets and lots of pampering! This is the best time in life to do so – you deserve it!

I had panic attacks when I quit smoking, I read online that you should face your fear and try to make the panic attack worse to gain control over the feelings, they can’t hurt you, and once you realize that, they stop happening(it could be dangerous while driving, I guess) just pull over and calm down, deep breaths through the nose and out the mouth, read a book on meditation or self hypnosis, I haven’t had an attack in 2 years
