Your Doctor should always take any concerns you raise seriously. That’s his or her job! However, if you feel your Doctor is not considering that you have a serious condition when you feel that you do, perhaps make sure that your symptoms meet criteria for an anxiety disorder (see below) and mention all the symptoms that apply to you during the consultation. If your Dr isn’t sympathetic to your needs or does not seem to reassure you adequately, you can always request a second opinion, or a referral to a Psychiatrist.
These are the DSM criteria for Generalised Anxiety disorder:
Excessive anxiety and worry occurring most days for at least six months, about a number of aspects of life.
Finding it difficult to control the worry.
The anxiety and worry are associated with three (or more) of the following six symptoms (with at least some symptoms present most days for the past 6 months).
restlessness or feeling on edge
easily fatigued
irritability
muscle tension
sleep disturbance
difficulty concentrating
PLUS you need clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.
Your Dr will also have to rule out a medical condition and drug/substance use as a cause of your symptoms.
Tell your Doctor exactly how you feel what is worrying you why you are worried and how much of your day and night is taken up with this worry.
be honest, show him some emotions your feeling… if he doesnt listen, find new doctor
GAD is General disorder anxiety, extrem feeling of worry, fast heart rate, short breath, bad mood, don’t concentrated, slow mind, dry lips, if you are going through that please get help but the best help is God.
I also suffered from severe anxiety and started having full blown panic attacks. I haven’t had any in years now. There is help out there – you don’t have to live like that.
Explain to your Dr. how you physically feel during an attack. Tell him if you sweat, shake, can’t get a proper breath, feel dizzy and like you’re going to faint or even die. Let him know how hard it is to live your day to day life like this. He is no doubt going to ask you about the stress in your life and ways you have been handling it.
For me, I was prescribed medication and also has therapy (talking to a psychologist) and managed with some time and hard work to stop the attacks. Good luck. I hope you feel better soon.
document
document the time, exactly what you’re feeling, how long the feelings last, and what was going on before an episode hit (the trigger)
if the doc does not listen find a good psychologist in your area or get a second opinion
My daughter has anxiety and just started taking meds. It was a long process. I took her to see a psychologist. after a couple of months and her school giving info. She was finally refer ed to a psychiatrist and, prescribed meds. She still sees
the psychologist once a week.
I agree your doctor should always take you seriously, but I know from experience sometimes medical professionals tend to appear blase and distant. Often though this doesn’t mean they don’t take you seriously, they just deal with many patients every day and don’t appear as sympathetic as we as patients would always like.
Theres many common symptoms of anxiety, but any list is just a rough guide, people are different so react in different ways. Some examples I found :
Chest pain or discomfort
Nausea, bloating or indigestion
Feeling light headed, dizzy or unsteady
Choking sensation
Shortness of breath
An uneasy feeling
Feeling as if you don’t exist
Fear of losing control
Pounding heart or palpitations
Sweating
Hot flushes or Chills
Becoming pale, colour draining from the face
Blushing or blotching of the skin Shaking
Urgent need to visit the toilet
Numbness or tingling sensations
I’m sure your doctor will take you seriously, just be forceful and don’t just accept it if he doesnt seem interested at first. Good luck.
