You are not alone. It’s very common to feel this way during pregnancy. Postpartum depression gets all the attention, but for many women, depression actually starts before delivery.

I had terrible anxiety and depression for the first five months of my pregnancy. I began to feel like an emotional wreck a week before I found out I was pregnant. I was crazy and making my husband crazy with me. I cried several times a day, even would wake up in the middle of the night and cry and worried about EVERYTHING!

I read a lot about the effects of antidepressants on a fetus and kept trying to hang in there without medication for the sake of the baby. I remember the day it all became too much to bear, I had thoughts of suicide, giving the baby up for adoption and aborting her.

I called the Dr.’s office and got in that day for counseling. My Dr. put me on 10mg of Celexa, the lowest dose and one of the antidepressants considered safer during pregnancy. It took a couple weeks, but I started feeling like myself again. I am a couple weeks away from delivery now, and my mood has been fantastic since starting the medication.

I have also read a few great books that have helped me cope with anxiety that I’d like to pass along to you: The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle, The Seven Laws of Spiritual Success by Deepak Chopra, and You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay.

Know that there is help out there for you, whether it be medication, counseling or self-help books. Please talk with your doctor. If he/she doesn’t understand, find one that does.

I already have one little girl, she is going to be a year next Sunday! From the day she was born my anxiety became worse than ever! I am not on medicine, I have never been, but my mother and all my family desperately want me to get on some kind of medicine to help. The first night my daughter was born I slept a total of 3 hours, and that wasn’t because my daughter was awake, she actually slept great, but I was up watching to make sure she was breathing. Now I have anxiety when it comes to leaving her, I went back to work for a month or two but I couldn’t handle leaving her, I always felt like she would get hurt or choke on something and i thought she was going to die. I can’t put her in daycare because I feel like if she screams they will just get so upset over it and SBS will happen. Now she has febrile seizures when she has fevers and it made my fear of sending her to a daycare sky rocket, i feel like they wont see that she has a fever and she will have a seizure and I wont be there for her and they wont know what to do.
